1) Irrigate your
plants well on Saturday if we do not have a significant rain event.
COLD AND DRY IS DEADLY FOR PLANTS! You don't want your plants
dehydrated prior to a freeze. Even if it rains, please don't forget
about your cold hardy, potted plants which may be under cover and not
benefit from rainfall.
2) Cover cold
sensitive plants (like Sago Palms, Oleander, etc) with fabric, NOT
PLASTIC!!! Burlap can be purchased from Farmer's Supply and is an
attractive, seasonal solution to plant protection. Old sheets do the
trick well also.
3) Bring all
houseplants inside, checking them carefully for insects beforehand. Make
sure they are well watered and give them a nice bath to reduce
potential issues with pests.
4) Be sure that
well heads and backflow preventers are covered with an insulated cover.
While our irrigation systems do not need to be overwintered, we do not
to protect our well heads and backflow preventers. Most of you are safe
here, but every once in a while we do come across an uncovered or
uninsulated cover. Check it. These repairs if there is a freeze and
there is damage, it can be costly.
5) Don't forget about the birds! They need food AND water, so fill up those bird feeders and baths. Wild
Bird and Garden has great bird seed, and for those frustrated by
squirrels eating all their seed, switch to safflower seed and you won't
be refilling those feeders as often.
