MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS SLOW TO 105 MPH
Hurricane Irene slowed slightly to 105 mph maximum sustained winds this morning, according to the 11 a.m. storm update from the National Hurricane Center. The storm is moving north at 14 mph, however, it is expected to make a turn to the north-northeast by Saturday. The Category 2 storm will likely hit the North Carolina coast around that strength, according to forecasts.
10 a.m. - Mandatory evacuation order for Holden Beach
The town of Holden Beach has issued a mandatory evacuation order for all residents as of 6 p.m. Mayor Alan Holden issued the order this morning. The bridge to the mainland will be closed when winds reach 45 mph. The town will be cutting off water and sewer service this afternoon, and won't restart it until officials "deem it safe," according to the evacuation order.
Wrightsville Beach enacts curfew
Wrightsville Beach is establishing a curfew effective Friday at 10 p.m. through Saturday at 7 a.m.Traffic over the Heidi Trask Drawbridge will be limited to residents, employees and those with an essential need for access, according to a town news release.Non-essential services have been suspended and town offices will close at 2 p.m. Friday. The town is encouraging residents on the beach front and low-lying areas to evacuate due to potential for power outages, storm surge and flooding.
